TUESDAY TRENDS – BABACHIR LAWAL

The Secretary-General of the Federation, Babachir Lawal has been relieved of his post and replaced by Mr. Boss Mustapha. Who apparently was born ready for the job, thus the name. The former Director-General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency Mr. Ayo Oke, who like a squirrel that forgets his nuts, oversaw the misplacing of a couple of million dollars in the Ikoyi-Gate scandal also got the sack.
Babachir Lawal and Ayo Oke have been under investigation for so long now, in the fast-paced internet age, it seems like a couple of years ago now. The sack seemed inevitable to wise thinking folks, but then, this is Nigeria.
The President Buhari led Federal Government definitely expected a rousing ovation from the populace, but at this point, I don’t know if it is exhaustion from screaming and demanding for the sack, or just plain hunger from this recession that is over but just won’t go away that is preventing the kudos from coming in.
In saner climes, as the President or one of his aides was announcing his sack, Babachir Lawal will be right next to him and would immediately be whisked away by either the police or one of our many anti-corruption agencies for prosecution, or as the announcement was made a police squad would be picking up Babachir Lawal. Better still, Babachir Lawal could just as well have been arrested before his sack was announced.
Hopefully, the report of the panel would be made public, sooner rather than later, unlike the JFK files. And the police or EFCC or ICPC, at this point we wouldn’t mind even NAFDAC or Boys Scout concluding the investigation and going ahead with the prosecution.
After we are done with this shindig, I hope something is done about Maina and then the fight against corruption can finally begin.
