Song Of The Day: Reminisce – Ponmile
I can’t remember the first time I heard Ponmile by Reminisce, but I do remember that I wondered why Reminisce had to go full on R n B on us. A part of me loved the song while a second part was second guessing Reminisce singing ability, which I still do. He isn’t Alaga Ibile by singing; it was by dropping bars upon bars of rap.
Be you a fan of rap music or not in Nigeria, it would be difficult not to know and respect what Reminisce has done with his career so far. First being noticed on the tribute song to Dagrin, then the JahBless’s Joor Ooh Original and Remix. He has gone on to become a mainstay of the rap game in Nigeria. Leading the indigenous rap genre and influencing a lot more people to go that route.
Ponmile tells the story of a marriage on the brink of collapse. It talks about demand for respect and faithfulness, love and lost love, lack of trust and infidelity, threat of revenge and violence, warning and hope. The video does a great job of visually interpreting the words. With good acting by Lota Chukwu and Odunlade Adekola and great directing from Clarence Peters.
The idea of officially releasing different covers of the song as part of the song is an unusual but very satisfying move by Reminisce. I first got to see Chidinma’s cover of Ponmile before discovering Aramide, Immaculate, and Akeem Adisa’s verions. For me, all four covers along with the Reminisce’s original make for a very wonderful playlist.
