Nneka – Heartbeat (Song Of The Day)
It is sad that one can conveniently say that Nigeria’s heart is lost. The heartbeat of the nation is labored, irregular and disturbing. Unhappiness is now an acceptable norm as survival is now all that some people can hold on to.
It is even sadder to note that many of us believed a couple of years ago that it couldn’t get any worse and we would finally begin an upward trajectory. True enough, it has gotten quite better for a privileged few, but when the majority are in danger of losing the little that they own which is ensuring their survival, then the supposedly “safe” minority is in danger of losing everything to the anarchy that will erupt when those with nothing to lose are left with nothing at hand.
Three years into a change of Party in power, we have watched the current government spend over two years complaining about the inadequacies of its predecessor, while an endless cycle of killing has been unleashed on the country.
Remembering that this government rode into power by drumming up the inadequacies of its predecessor in the years leading to the last general election, what will it drum up in the months leading to the next election in order to retain power? The collapse of the national power grid? Attempt by the EFCC to arrest principal officers of the Presidency being botched by superiorly armed security operatives and the president too? Failure to contain outbreaks of diseases, leading to loss of lives on a scale never witnessed before in Peace-time Nigeria? As a matter of fact, what did this administration achieve out of its quite lengthy manifesto?
“A people deserve the leader it gets” is a saying I have heard since childhood, I try to argue against that in the case of Nigeria, but when I hear about the inhuman treatment of Nigerians to one another, beginning from a Pastor defrauding his member, to trading one another in the deserts of Libya, to SARS officials manhandling the people they are supposed to protect, to even Civilian Government Dignitaries slapping and disrespectfully treating their security attaches, to how a Civil Servant becomes a Demi-god when you need their service, I just don’t bother defending us anymore.
I can’t find a better way to describe my pain and disappointment with Our beloved country, I hope Nneka’s Heartbeat does a good job of that.

Heartbeat Lyrics:
You said you’d be there for me
In times of trouble when I need you and I’m down
And likewise you need friendship
It’s from my side pure love but I see lately things have been changing
You have goals to achieve
But the roads you take are broad and heartless
That wants you make another way
You throw stones
Can you see that I am human I am breathing
But you don’t give a damn
Chorus:
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing
Blood blood blood…blood keeps rushing
And now the world is asleep
How will you ever wake her up when she is deep in her dreams, wishing
And yet so many die
And still we think that it is all about us
It’s all about you
You sold your soul to the evil and the lust
And the passion and the money and you
See the same ones die, people hunger for decades
Suffer under civilized armed-robbers, modern slaveholders
Chorus:
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing
Blood blood blood…. keeps rushing
Evaded, eliminated, erased, interrogated
Our tradition, our love for our fellow countrymen
Our property, our resources – our pride
Can you feel my heart beating
No no no…you don’t
Chorus:
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you feel the pain you’re causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you feel the pain you’re causing
